Some Twittter basics
Like most things that are devilishly simple, Twitter can be completely confusing to new users. Most people have taken a trial and error approach, basically copying what other people are doing – here are some of the basics to get you started. Please add! Basic tweeting Your message (including any url you link to) is restricted to 140 characters – and yes, that includes spaces. Shorten your urls with sites like tr.im your URLs Replying or directing a message at a particular tweeter – enter@username – the tweet will then sit in their replies screen Re-tweeting. Seen something interesting and want to post it again so your followers will see it? It’s good manners to credit where got your information – simply post RT@username in your tweet. What’s all the hash tags (#) about? If you want to group information on a subject together so it can be easily found agree on a hashtag search term, such #internationalsearch which WebCertain use to discuss the International Search Summit All of this is made much easier if you use an application like Tweetdeck which automates a lot of the re-tweeting. Finding information on Twitter Go to Twitter Search Here is an example of search results for our tagged search term internationalsearch - Twitter Search A space between the words brings up lots more results where people are talking about the sector "international search" - Twitter Search I would also recommend which gives really good results for Twitter, blogs, images etc. Icerocket blog search Finding people on Twitter This is what flummoxes most people when they first sign up – right, I’m here, now who do I talk to!? The first step is to see if your “real life” friends and contacts are on Twitter. As there’s no requirement to use real names, searching on Twitter can be fruitless, getting in touch via LinkedIn and Facebook can help you to find specific people. How about finding new contacts? See who your friends and colleagues are following, it’s likely that many of them will have information that is of interest to you. Or, go to Twitter Grader Twitter Grader | Get Your Twitter Ranking – it allows you to find people by location. Also, whether your interest is marine bio-physics, pay-per-click advertising, or knitting searching on Twitter for posts on the subjects should put you in touch with the right people. How do I get more followers? Well – first off – it’s quality not quantity that matters! But, without anyone following you, it’s all a bit pointless… Don’t be tempted to use one of those tools that adds instant followers – yes, you might have a large number of followers – but most of them will be spambots – and what’s the point of that? Quite simply, tweeting regularly, interestingly and in a friendly way is the best way to build up followers. Engage in conversation, be original and use good manners. Also, many follows are reciprocal – when someone follows you, check out their profile and follow them if they look interesting, this way you are entering their network. Last week I presented (on behalf of WebCertain). on the opportunities and threats of marketing through Twitter.
Here's a little extract - Twitter is definitely a “marmite” concept – it divides people. There are some who have embraced it with almost religious zeal and it provokes red-faced rage in others. Coincidentally my feelings about marmite and Twitter are pretty similar - and rather mixed. I can definitely see the point, I think it’s here to stay, but I don’t want too much of it. Under discussion: * What is Twitter? * Celebrities on Twitter and the big media story of 2009 * Twitter as a news aggregator * The networking opportunities on Twitter * Twitter Search: The opportunity to go mainstream * So, you’re on Twitter – who are you and who are you representing? * Use Twitter to bolster brand web search results Read my rather lengthly thoughts on marketing through Twitter at SEO-PR-Tips.com |
